Ashley Copenhaver

Major: Biological Science and Mathematics

Minor: Computer Science

Research Interest(s):

In the future, I hope to pursue research related to neurodegenerative disease while obtaining my PhD in Neuroscience. I have always been drawn to the biological aspects of the brain, and after beginning my studies here at UMBC I have shifted my focus to also involve computer science and mathematical modeling of biological processes. Through a combination of these areas of study, I wish to make an impact on the understanding of the underlying processes of neurodegeneration.

Other Relevant Information:

In addition to being part of the McNair Scholars program, I am a member of the Honors College and a recipient of a Merit Scholarship. My fellow residents in Erickson Residential Hall elected me to become the President of the Community Council, where I attend help plan fun and educational programs for our community. I am also involved in UMBC’s general campus activities as a member of (seb) — the student events board. If I am not on campus, my passion for gymnastics comes through in my jobs as a Maryland Gymnastics Judge and a Gymnastics Coach.

What does being a UMBC McNair scholar mean to you?:

Being a UMBC McNair Scholar has given me the support I need to believe that I can pursue a graduate program. I am surrounded by like-minded people who desire to pursue similar long-term goals, and as people always say, you are the people you surround yourself with. By surrounding myself with highly motivated students, I am constantly driven to stay focused on my long term goals, and I have also surrounded myself with a great network of people who can guide me along my path to a PhD.
